Eric Dietrich Wins Medalist Honors After Course-Record 64
UNCASVILLE, CT (April 27, 2016) – The UConn men’s golf team honored a team of visiting military veterans by giving them a performance to remember. Hosted at Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Preston, CT, the tournament honors Til Duty Is Done, a Connecticut-based organization that helps returning military veterans with housing, employment and education. The event featured the unique aspect of a competing team consisting entirely of veterans from the Veteran Golfers Association (VGA), playing alongside the 12 college teams.
UConn junior Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) won the first tournament of his college career, highlighted by his course-record 64 in Sunday’s final round, to lead the Huskies to an 11-stroke victory.
It was the second tournament championship of the 2015-16 season for the Huskies and their seventh top five finish in 10 events. Their performance in the Til Duty Is Done Invitational, however, is likely the finest all-around performance in the nine-year head coaching career of UConn’s Dave Pezzino. UConn had four players shoot under par and had five players finish among the top 10.
The Huskies shot a sizzling 18-under 287-277-282=846 to outdistance the field in the 13-team tournament. Rhode Island was the runner-up, shooting a 7-under 293-282-288=857, while Army West Point was third with a 2-over 877.
Dietrich was simply outstanding, shooting the lowest score, a 13-under 203 (73-66-64=203), and the lowest round, 64, of his career, topping runner-up Evan Russell of Hartford by three strokes. Dietrich had two eagles and led the 76-player field by playing the Par 5 holes in 6-under par. It is the sixth top 10 and ninth top 20 finish of his career and he now has shot 20 rounds of par of better and nine sub-70 rounds.
Freshman Blake Kelley (Manchester, Conn.), playing as an individual in his first event of the season, tied for fourth place with a 6-under (73-67-70=210).
Senior co-captains Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) and John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.), also notched top 10 finishes. Zaback tied for sixth place with a 4-under 67-70-75=212, the 15th top 10 finish and 24th top 20 finish of his college career. Flaherty shot a 1-under 74-70-71=215 to finish eighth, his eighth top 10 finish.
Also finishing in the top 10 was UConn senior Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.), who shot a 1-over 73-72-72=217 to finish in a tie for 10th place, his second top-10 finish. Rounding out the UConn team finish was senior Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) who tied for 35th place with a 79-71-79=229.
Besides Kelley, there were five additional Huskies who played as individuals. Freshman Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinson, Mass.) shot 74-76-71=221 to tie for 16th place, junior Tyler Cooke (Warwick, R.I.) shot 75-72-77=224 to tie for 25th place, and sophomore Sasha Wortelboer (Geneva, Switzerland) shot 78-79-75=232 to tie for 40th place. Also competing for the Huskies were freshman Nabeel Khan (Westerville, Ohio), who shot 80-78-75=233 to tie for 45th place and freshman Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.), who shot 74-78-84=236 to tie for 53rd place.

UNCASVILLE, CT (February 24, 2016) – Undefeated world champion Keith Thurman sustained an injury as a result of a car accident that has forced his welterweight title defense date against Shawn Porter at Mohegan Sun Arena to be cancelled. The announcement was made Monday by promoter Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment. According to his doctors, Thurman’s injuries are not considered serious and he is expected to be cleared to resume training in the coming weeks. Thurman vs. Porter was the main event of a scheduled two-fight card to be broadcast in prime time on CBS on March 12th. This fight and the network broadcast will now be rescheduled for a later date.
Tickets purchased for the Thurman vs. Porter fight will be refunded at the point of purchase.
“While it is unfortunate that we must temporarily postpone this marquee matchup, a main event of the magnitude of Thurman vs. Porter requires both fighters be healthy and at their best,” said DiBella. “Keith is anxious to resume training as soon he is able and both he and Shawn are looking forward to a new fight date.”
Mohegan Sun Arena is now ranked consistently among the top venues in the world according to Billboard Magazine, Pollstar and Venues Today. It has won “Casino of The Year” at the Country Music Awards in 2008 & 2010 and in 2013, was voted “Arena Of The Year” at the G2E Global Gaming Conference in Las Vegas. Also in 2013, Mohegan Sun won “Casino of The Year” in 2 categories at the Academy of Country Music Awards. Mohegan Sun Arena was also ranked among the top 10 arena venues in the nation for 2014, regardless of size. In 2015, Mohegan Sun took home the IEBA award for “Casino of the Year.” For more information on concerts and other great events, visit Mohegan Sun. Keith Thurman to defend WBA Welterweight Title Against Shawn Porter In Blockbuster Showdown of Elite 147-pounders on Saturday, March 12th from Mohegan Sun Arena; Live on CBS at 8:30pm
UNCASVILLE, CT (January 26, 2016) – Mohegan Sun Arena will host WBA Welterweight World Champion Keith “One-Time” Thurman in defense of his title against former champ “Showtime” Shawn Porter in a blockbuster matchup of two of the world’s best 147-pound fighters on Saturday, March 12th on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS.
The welterweight showdown will air live on CBS at 8:30pm from Mohegan Sun. The event, promoted by DiBella Entertainment, is produced by SHOWTIME Sports® for the CBS Television Network, both divisions of the CBS Corporation. The last primetime boxing event on CBS was Muhammad Ali-Leon Spinks on February 15, 1978.
Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs), of Clearwater, FL., and Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), of Las Vegas by way of Akron, Ohio, are both coming off superb 2015 campaigns that solidified the fresh faces among the elite of arguably boxing’s most exciting division. With perennial pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather now retired, the 27-year-old Thurman and the 28-year-old Porter are hungry to stake their claim as the future of boxing.
“Thurman vs. Porter is a marquee matchup of two elite boxers in the prime of their careers, and the winner will establish himself as arguably the #1 fighter in boxing’s glamour division,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “Fights of this caliber don’t come along very often, and when they do, they deserve to be on the biggest stage possible. That’s why all of us at SHOWTIME and CBS are so excited to be able to deliver this pivotal matchup to a primetime audience on America’s highest-rated network.”
“Last year was an amazing year for me: I headlined the very first Premier Boxing Champions show and was named ‘PBC Fighter of the Year,’ Thurman said. “But this is my year to dominate the welterweight division and I’m excited to be getting ready to take out Shawn Porter. I am ready to get back in the ring and bring boxing fans what they’ve been looking for – the top true welterweight champion of the world, the one who is going to take out all competitors one by one. I am Keith ‘One-Time’ Thurman and I’m going to show you what a champion looks like on March 12.”
“I’m very confident in my ability. That’s why I’ve been looking forward to this fight because I’m someone who can beat Keith Thurman,” Porter said. “Nothing about Keith really makes me nervous. I do know that he’s going to be ready for this fight. He’s a fighter that has the heart of a lion just like I do. I expect this to be a fight to the finish. A win over Keith Thurman is what we’ve been waiting for.”
“Keith Thurman against Shawn Porter is one of the best matchups that can be made in the welterweight division right now and I am thrilled that it is taking place at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT.,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “The hard-punching world titleholder Thurman and the highly skilled former champion Porter will have the opportunity to prove that they are the next heir to the throne in the post-Mayweather era of the 147-pound division.”
“One-Time” Thurman, who owns a better than 80 percent KO ratio and knocked out 18 of his first 20 opponents, is considered one of the most avoided fighters in boxing. After unsuccessfully lobbying to fight the best of the division for the past two years, Thurman finally had a breakout 2015.
The hard-hitting Florida native floored former champion and long-time contender Robert Guerrero en route to a convincing 12th round unanimous last March in Las Vegas. He then dominated and bloodied former champ Luis Collazo on July 11th, winning via seventh round TKO. Thurman won the Interim WBA belt with a knockout of Diego Chaves in 2013 and scored consecutive knockouts over Jesus Soto Karass (2013) and Julio Diaz (2014) in his first and second title defenses.
Against Porter, Thurman will now get a chance to prove what he’s been claiming for years – that he’s the world’s best welterweight – in the toughest test of his career.
“Showtime” Porter has built one of the most impressive resumes in the division since making his welterweight debut in 2010. Porter, who surprisingly turned professional as a super middleweight (168 pounds), won the IBF crown in 2013 with an impressive unanimous decision over Devon Alexander.
The physically-gifted and offensive-minded Ohio native knocked out former two-division world champion Paulie Malignaggi with a brutal clean right hand in April of 2014 in the lone defense of his title. Porter lost the IBF belt less than four months after the Malignaggi victory in a close majority decision defeat to undefeated British superstar Kell Brook, but he bounced back with a fifth-round knockout of Erick Bone in March of 2015. Porter scored what many considered an upset victory in his next bout over then three-division world champion Adrien Broner with a clear unanimous decision last June 20th in Las Vegas.
The aggressive, come-forward Porter has built his career as a perennial underdog who relishes in the role. But, with the resume he has built, it’s hard to consider him an underdog anymore heading into this crossroads showdown with Thurman.
Promoted by DiBella Entertainment, tickets are on sale now and are priced at $300.00, $150.00, $75.00 and $35.00 (plus applicable fees) through Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster customers may log on to ticketmaster.com; call 1.800.745.3000; or visit any Ticketmaster outlet. Tickets are also available at the Mohegan Sun Box Office, subject to availability.
