The Inagural World Caddie Matches From Mohegan Sun Golf Club, Which Benefited K9s For Warriors, Exceeds Expectations

UNCASVILLE, CT (August 30, 2016) – The first-ever World Caddie Matches took place on Monday, August 29th, from Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Batlic, CT. In the competitive “Ryder Cup” style match play tournament, in which some of the top US pro caddies took on an International team, the US took home the win, 26 to 7.
The unique golf event, presented by Beckmen Law Firm and former PGA pro Tour caddie, Michael Collins of ESPN, gave some notable caddie’s, all impressive golfers in their own right, a chance to finally battle some of their peers they see regularly along the PGA tour season.
42-year veteran caddy of the PGA tour,  Mike “Fluff” Cowan (Jim Furyk) was on-hand competing, as was John “Long Socks” McClaren, who caddies for Paul Casey, who could also be seen helping his Caddy on every shot at Mohegan Sun Golf Club on Monday.
PGA Tour professionals Billy Hurley III, Charley Hoffman and Johnson Wagner also attended World Caddie Matches in support. Other notable Caddies that played were J.P. Fitzgerald (Rory McIlroy), Joe LaCava (Tiger Woods), Ted Scott (Bubba Watson), Mark Fulcher (Justin Rose), Brett Waldman (Charley Hoffman), Daisuke Shindo (Hideki Matsuyama), Damond Green (Zach Johnson), Christian Donald (Brendan Steele), Paul Tesori (Webb Simpson) and Gareth Lord (Henrik Stenson).
As The World Caddie Matches were winding down Monday, one of the caddies especially instrumental in organizing the event, Steve Hulka, mentioned that they raised well over the goal of $25,000 for the organization, K9s For Warriors. K9s For Warriors is dedicated to providing service canines to warriors suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disability, traumatic brain injury and other challenges that may face men and women returning from service. Their goal is to empower them to return to civilian life with dignity and independence.
“This was a bigger success than we ever dreamed, and it could not of been accomplished without the help from my wife, Mary Hulka, and all of the other amazing folks with the PGA, Beckmen Law, Mohegan Sun and all of the caddie’s that took part. We can’t wait to bring the event back to Mohegan Sun in the future,” said PGA caddie and co-caption of the US World Caddie team, Steve Hulka.
Mohegan Sun Golf Club VP & Director of Golf Operations, Philip Krick, Jr also added, “We made a lot of good friendships through this special World Caddie Matches golf event. The caddies were amazing, K9s For Warriors is a great cause, and seeing PGA pros like Paul Casey and Charley Hoffman cheering on their caddies and friends, made for a very memorable day at Mohegan Sun Golf Club.”

Mohegan Sun Employees Donate More 20,000 Non-Perishable Food Items For New London, CT Food Center

UNCASVILLE, CT (March 8, 2016) – Last month, Mohegan Sun ran a Battle of the Departments Food Drive where all of the food donations go to benefit United Way’s Gemma E. Moran Labor Food Center out of New London, CT. Mohegan Sun is proud to report that 23,003 items of non-perishable food were collected in just one month, to help feed community members in need.
The drive came about as Mohegan Sun received information from United Way that the first few months of the New Year can be especially difficult and a time when food centers really need extra help. With that, team members across all departments went above and beyond.  1,338 donations were made by the Regional Marketing team, which includes the Connecticut Sun and Sponsorship staff, to take home the win!
“Assisting the community is something that our Team Members are always willing to lend their time for, whether it is helping at Coogan Farm in the spring, assisting in the Tommy Toy distribution around the holidays or bringing in canned goods in the winter months. This recent effort in particular really made it about working together as departments and the participation was really amazing and something we are extremely proud of. We certainly will continue to build on creative ideas like this for such good causes in and around the region,” said Mohegan Sun’s Assistant General Manager Jeffrey Hamilton.
Virginia L. Mason, President and CEO of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut added that, “The event organized by Mohegan Sun is an innovative and fun way to get everyone engaged in meeting the needs of our community. This creative special event will certainly help keep the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center’s shelves stocked so that we may continue serving families facing hunger through our 81 member agencies and our Mobile Food Pantry program. We are eternally thankful to our friends at Mohegan Sun and grateful for their generous donation.”
Mohegan Sun also sponsors a Mobile Food Pantry each month at Three Rivers, where team members/volunteers distribute food to 80-100 families in our local community each month and have been involved with this effort for over a year now.

Mohegan Sun Acquires Second Professional Sports Team

Mohegan Sun Arena to become home field for the former Philadelphia Wings in the National Lacrosse League

UNCASVILLE, CT (August 6, 2014) – Mohegan Sun and the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority (MTGA) announced today it has purchased half of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The team will relocate to Uncasville, CT and will begin play in December at Mohegan Sun Arena.
This is the second professional sports team acquired by the Mohegan Tribe and MTGA, which has owned the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA since 2003. It is the second current ownership group of Native American descent in the NLL, which is committed to honoring both the culture and history of the game which was founded by Native Americans over 700 years ago.
“The Mohegan Tribe is thrilled to be associated with a game with centuries-old roots with the Eastern Woodland Indians,” Kevin Brown “Red Eagle” said.  “By bringing the lacrosse team to our reservation land, we are not only creating a tie with the past, but bringing the game into an exciting future with our top-notch sports and entertainment team.  We are aiming to create a team and community spirit to match what we have been able to achieve with the Connecticut Sun.”
“We are equally excited about partnering with Mohegan Sun and the MTGA,” team president and co-owner Michael French said. “The New England market for lacrosse for both men and women has been expanding at a phenomenal pace. We have a great nucleus of proven players, strong leadership in our locker room and a very experienced coaching staff. We look forward to bringing all of this energy to Mohegan Sun Arena.”
The franchise name will be announced at a later date. The team will be a member of the NLL East Division, joining the Buffalo Bandits, Minnesota Swarm, Rochester Knighthawks and Toronto Rock. Teams in the NLL West Division are the Calgary Roughnecks, Colorado Mammoth, Edmonton Rush and Vancouver Stealth. NLL teams play an 18 game regular season schedule from December through April, with all games being played on weekends.
“On behalf of the entire NLL, we are proud to welcome the Mohegan Tribe as owners, further re-connecting our league with the rich roots of the game,” said NLL Commissioner George Daniel.  “We are also excited about the prospects of bringing the NLL to Connecticut and greater New England for the 2015 season.”
Each NLL team features a 20 man active roster with up to four additional practice squad players. The current roster will remain intact for the new franchise. A total of 18 players, 16 runners and two goalies dress for each game with up to six players per team allowed on the floor during play. NLL games feature four 15-minute quarters as well as a sudden-death overtime period if tied at the end of regulation play.
Professional indoor lacrosse combines the physical play of hockey with the high-scoring, fast-paced and play-making style of basketball. Indoor lacrosse is played on turf often inside the confines of an ice hockey rink with glass and rink boards intact. Teams combine to score an average of 23 goals during an NLL game.
