World’s Strongest Man Qualifier: Giants Live!

Hulking strongmen showcase their power and might in the first qualifier event at Mohegan Sun
Many of the world’s strongest men will return to southeastern Connecticut for the World’s Strongest Man Qualifier.  These mountains of muscle and brawn will attempt to press, lift and carry thousands of pounds at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, May 17th starting at 4:00pm.  This event is part of the 2009 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) competition, the qualifier to the World’s Strongest Man championship event.

Athletes from around the world will battle in such feats of strength as the Giant Timber Frame Carry, the Car Deadlift and the Atlas Stone competition.   The American contingency features Derek Poundstone (Waterbury, Connecticut), 2007’s America’s Strongest Man and 2nd place at 2008’s WSM; Travis Ortmayer (Cypress, Texas), 2008 WSM finalist and Brian Shaw (Denver, Colorado), 2008’s Hawaii’s Strongest Man.
Meanwhile, the roster of international competitors includes: Mark Felix (Grenada), fourth place at 2006’s WSM; Sebastian Wenta (Poland), second place at 2007’s WSM; Terry Hollands (United Kingdom), WSM finalist and third place at the 2008 Mohegan Sun Grand Prix; Jimmy Marku (United Kingdom), 2008’s Britain’s Strongest Man; Hugo Girard (Canada), 2002 WSM and five-time Canada’s Strongest Man; Misha Koklyaev (Russia), six-time Russian weight-lifting champion; Richard Skog (Norway), 2008 WSM Qualifier and Johannes Arsjo (Sweden), 2008 WSM Qualifier.
In the Giant Timber Frame Carry, the athletes will each attempt to lift and carry a 750-pound timber frame and carry it for 30 meters/100 feet.  Furthest or fastest time to complete course wins. The athlete will have a 60-second time limit to complete the course.
In the Car Dead Lift, the athletes will attempt to lift the rear end of a compact car with their bare hands for as many repetitions as possible in a 60 second time limit.
During the Atlas Stones portion, the athletes will attempt to lift, carry and load six stones weighing 285 – 420 pounds onto platforms. Fastest time to load all six stones (or the most stones) wins.  The athlete will have a 60-second time limit to complete all six stones.

Catch Fall Out Boy with Mohegan Sun’s “Signings & Sightings” Event

Fall Out Boy, Metro Station and Hey Monday will host exclusive CD signings in conjunction with their performances in the Arena on April 29th

Immediately following their performance in the Arena on Wednesday, April 29th, Grammy-nominated rockers Fall Out Boy will participate in a “Signings & Sightings” event.  Prior to the performance fans will also get a chance to meet, greet and snag autographs with members of the chart-topping band Metro Station and Alternative Rock group Hey Monday at 5:00pm. Fall Out Boy has built up a loyal following with relentless touring; they have performed over 1,200 shows since their inception in 2000. International Best-Selling Author Lee Child Hosts “Winning Authors” Event at Mohegan Sun

Renowned author Lee Child hosts an open forum on Saturday, May 30th, addressing the Jack Reacher series and his latest novel, Gone Tomorrow

 Mohegan Sun’s “Winning Authors” series is proud to present New York Times best-selling author Lee Child.  The internationally-recognized author will host a live discussion on Saturday, May 30th in The Cabaret Theatre at 3:00pm to be followed by a book signing in the Spring Gateway in The Shops concourse at 4:00pm.

Lee Child is well known for his in-depth development of characters and thrilling storylines. Foreign rights in the Jack Reacher series have been sold in forty territories, and have won both the Anthony and Barry Awards for “Best First Mystery” and the “Nero” Award. All titles have been optioned for major motion pictures.  Child’s appearance in Mohegan Sun’s “Winning Authors” series joins the elite class of authors including Sue Grafton, Nora Roberts, Robin Cook and Catherine Coulter.  

His appearance will take place eleven days after the release of his thirteenth Jack Reacher thriller, Gone Tomorrow. Uncas Ballroom set to host special party for the 135th annual Kentucky Derby

UNCASVILLE, CT (April 6, 2009) – Celebrate the 135th annual “Run for the Roses” at Mohegan Sun on Saturday, May 2nd. A special party will be hosted in the Uncas Ballroom beginning at 10:00am. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the race and get some expert advise from some of horse racing’s finest minds – all while enjoying some tasty treats prepared by Mohegan Sun’s all-star culinary team.

Picking that winning horse can be a daunting task.  That’s why here at Mohegan Sun we like to have a couple aces in the hole, otherwise known as horse racing experts Jim Mazur, President of Progressive Handicapping, Inc and author of The Triple Crown Undercard Handicapper 2007, and WEEI sports radio host Mike Mutnansky.

Styx began as an Art/Progressive Rock band in the early 70s and scored a hit single with “Lady” in 1975.  It wasn’t until after the release of their 1977 album, The Grand Illusion, that Styx became an arena headliner.  Some of the band’s biggest hits include “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Babe” and “Mr. Roboto.”
REO Speedwagon’s constant stream of chart-topping albums and hit singles distinguished the band’s output in the late 70s and early 80s.  Their most recent album, 2007’s Find Your Own Way Home, is their first CD of completely new material since 1996.
.38 Special formed in the mid 70s, becoming a household name with such hits as “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up In You” and “If I’d Been The One.”  The current lineup features guitarist and co-lead singer Don Barnes, rhythm guitarist and co-lead singer Donnie Van Zant, guitarist Danny Chauncey, bassist Larry Junstrom, keyboardist Bobby Capps and drummer Gary Moffatt.
