Mohegan Sun Donates Surplus Food to Local Community

Delivery of food was made on March 19th, after the temporary closure of Mohegan Sun

UNCASVILLE, CT (March 20, 2020) – Mohegan Sun, which has enjoyed a long and impactful relationship with The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut (UWSECT), sent two truckloads of food (equivalent to nearly 15,000 meals) to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank in New London, CT this week.

Faced with refrigerators full of food across various Mohegan Sun dining outlets, and a temporary closure just underway due to the emerging global health crisis, Mohegan Sun jumped into action with community partners, UWSECT, to donate what amounted to twenty pallets of food that included fruit, vegetables, dairy products and other perishable food items. The donation will be combined with additional donated foods at Gemma E. Moran, and will be shared amongst a network of 60+ traditional pantries across Southeastern Connecticut and UWSECT’s ten monthly mobile food pantry distributions.

“It’s been a tough week for many communities and businesses alike, but to team up with United Way of Southeastern CT and ensure we make good use of a significant amount of surplus food, was really inspiring,” said Jeff Hamilton, President & General Manager of Mohegan Sun. “We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who was involved in this effort and hope it is a positive contribution to the dedicated work that organizations like United Way and food centers like Gemma E. Moran do every day.”

Mohegan Sun Employees Donate More 20,000 Non-Perishable Food Items For New London, CT Food Center

UNCASVILLE, CT (March 8, 2016) – Last month, Mohegan Sun ran a Battle of the Departments Food Drive where all of the food donations go to benefit United Way’s Gemma E. Moran Labor Food Center out of New London, CT. Mohegan Sun is proud to report that 23,003 items of non-perishable food were collected in just one month, to help feed community members in need.
The drive came about as Mohegan Sun received information from United Way that the first few months of the New Year can be especially difficult and a time when food centers really need extra help. With that, team members across all departments went above and beyond.  1,338 donations were made by the Regional Marketing team, which includes the Connecticut Sun and Sponsorship staff, to take home the win!
“Assisting the community is something that our Team Members are always willing to lend their time for, whether it is helping at Coogan Farm in the spring, assisting in the Tommy Toy distribution around the holidays or bringing in canned goods in the winter months. This recent effort in particular really made it about working together as departments and the participation was really amazing and something we are extremely proud of. We certainly will continue to build on creative ideas like this for such good causes in and around the region,” said Mohegan Sun’s Assistant General Manager Jeffrey Hamilton.
Virginia L. Mason, President and CEO of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut added that, “The event organized by Mohegan Sun is an innovative and fun way to get everyone engaged in meeting the needs of our community. This creative special event will certainly help keep the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center’s shelves stocked so that we may continue serving families facing hunger through our 81 member agencies and our Mobile Food Pantry program. We are eternally thankful to our friends at Mohegan Sun and grateful for their generous donation.”
Mohegan Sun also sponsors a Mobile Food Pantry each month at Three Rivers, where team members/volunteers distribute food to 80-100 families in our local community each month and have been involved with this effort for over a year now.
