Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods Take Part In Day Of Caring At Camp Harkness

With over 30,000 visitors expected this summer, volunteers from Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods joined together to make a big impact in getting Camp Harkness ready
UNCASVILLE, CT (May 18, 2016) – The beautiful and scenic Camp Harkness, located on the shores of LongIsland Sound in Waterford, CT, is set to officially open for the summer season on May 20, 2016. The 102- acre property is dedicated to exclusively serving its community’s special needs & disabled citizens and there was plenty of work to be accomplished as they near their busiest time of year. And with that, for the second year straight and with a big help from The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, over 100 Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods employees teamed up on Tuesday, May 17th to work on everything from painting benches, raking leaves, clearing brush along roads and paths, grounds keeping, weeding, refreshing the wheelchair accessible garden, beach + playground cleanup, prepping lodging and more!
“It’s great that there is well over 100 volunteers again this year, including experienced and much needed engineers as well, for this effort between Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. We’re extremely thankful to United Way for helping us once again with a great event for our community. We hope to take part in this one for many years to come,” said Mohegan Sun Assistant General Manager, Jeff Hamilton, as he was on-hand for the Day of Caring.
Jersey Mike’s provided lunch for all of the volunteers, which were about 120 in total.  The work stretched from the Camp’s main road and seasonal cabins all the way back to the beach, picnic pavilions & playground along the shore. It is a great deal of work that gets done in one day!
“All of the staff, campers and pass-holders at Camp Harkness want to express their thanks for the  fabulous work done by Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods volunteers. Everything looks so clean, clear and beautiful! It was wonderful to see so many generous people willing to give their time to help people in need. Thanks Mohegan Sun! Thanks Foxwoods! Thanks United Way! We couldn’t do it without you,” said Camp Harkness Director, Victoria Severin.

Facilities at Camp Harkness include year-round and seasonal cabins, year-round cottages, seasonal tent sites, barnyard animals and horseback riding, picnic pavilions & grills, accessible playscape, scenic walkway and overlook, bathhouse, beach with seasonal boardwalk, gardens, dining hall, lodge and infirmary.  Camp Harkness is open year-round although many of the programs and facilities are seasonal.  Camp Harkness is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Department of Developmental Services.
