Mohegan Sun Named “Hospitality Hero” By The Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau

UNCASVILLE, CT (March 19, 2021) – The Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau (CTCSB) has named Mohegan Sun in their first group of honorees for their new Hospitality Heroes recognition list. The CTCSB is Connecticut’s only statewide meetings & sports event sales and marketing organization, and works with planners and promoters to book new or returning conventions, meetings and sports businesses. The new Hospitality Heroes recognition program highlights hospitality industry members for their innovative business initiatives and community support over the past year, despite potential financial and health challenges caused as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re really excited to be named as one of CTCSB’s Hospitality Heroes”, said John Washko, VP of Exhibitions and Sales for Mohegan Sun. “Mohegan Sun as a whole, and certainly our Meetings & Conventions team, has put in a great deal of time, effort and dedication over the last year to make sure we’re able to chart a productive, positive and safe path forward for our guests, clients and partners. This honor is a strong reflection of that hard work, and we thank the CTCSB for this recognition and their great work for the state of Connecticut.”

According to the CTCSB, Mohegan Sun has been recognized as an early leader by demonstrating to the meetings and hospitality industries worldwide how to continue working safely and creatively during COVID via hybrid meetings and events. In November 2020, Mohegan Sun partnered with Northstar Meetings Group to present a special conference called “Reconvening for Recovery: Live!”. This hybrid event was dedicated to helping businesses navigate planning successful hybrid meetings, conferences and conventions, all while complying with industry health and safety protocols. Mohegan Sun was able to safely host 75 attendees in-person and over 1,000 attendees digitally who were fully integrated into the event.

The Meetings & Conventions team at Mohegan Sun created a COVID-19 resource center designed to assist planners in safely creating meetings, conventions and events. This resource center includes adjusted capacity charts, details on hosting hybrid events, and other information regarding health and safety protocols that Mohegan Sun has implemented to safely host events. Mohegan Sun also receives the Hospitality Heroes recognition from the CTCSB after successfully operating a mass vaccination clinic through a partnership with Yale New Haven Health in the Earth Expo & Convention Center.

Mohegan Sun reviews all health and safety protocols and regularly updates them to reflect the needs of the community, with the consideration of state and federal recommendations. A full list of Mohegan Sun’s guidelines can be found at mohegansun.com/updates.

Governor Lamont, Mohegan Tribe And Yale New Haven Health Announce Launch Of Mass COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic At Mohegan Sun

UNCASVILLE, CT (February 18, 2021) – In a continued effort to meet public health needs relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Ned Lamont, the Mohegan Tribe, and Yale New Haven Health System today announced plans to open a large-scale community vaccination site at Mohegan Sun.

The clinic will open on Friday, February 19, 2021, and will be located at Mohegan Sun’s Earth Expo & Convention Center. It will operate on an appointment-only basis, weather permitting, and is available for Connecticut residents.

On the first day of operations, the clinic is expected to serve up to 300 Connecticut residents with the ability to increase vaccine distribution based on availability. Additional appointments will be added regularly as more supply of the vaccine becomes available by the federal government. It will operate in accordance with existing state rules and procedures relating to vaccine eligibility.

Connecticut residents who are currently eligible to be vaccinated can schedule an appointment for the clinic by visiting www.ynhhs.org/covidvaccine and selecting the Mohegan Sun location. Appointments will also be available through the state’s COVID Vaccine Appointment Assist Line (877-918-2224), which is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

“This latest mass vaccination site shows the coordinated effort our state is making with our tribal partners, and our partners in healthcare,” Governor Lamont said. “The Mohegan Tribe has taken incredible steps throughout the pandemic to keep its members and residents safe through standing up testing sites, the distribution of PPE, and coordination with the Connecticut Department of Public Health. We will get through this pandemic by working together, especially in vaccine distribution, and that’s exactly what this site represents.”

“The Mohegan Tribe has a long-held philosophy of cooperation and working together with our neighbors, and throughout this pandemic we have practiced those values each and every day,” James Gessner, Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe, said. “Whether it meant temporarily shutting down operations entirely, installing new state-of-the-art safety technology, distributing PPE to healthcare partners, or helping provide community COVID testing, Mohegan is working hard to help Connecticut manage this crisis. Now, the next step in that work will be serving as a hub in southeastern Connecticut for the state’s vaccination efforts. We are proud to continue to help serve our community, and eager to help Connecticut get as many state residents vaccinated as quickly as possible.”

“We are excited to provide more COVID-19 vaccinations to the residents in southeastern Connecticut,” Patrick Green, President and CEO of L+M Healthcare, said. “The Mohegan Sun community vaccine site is yet another extension of the remarkable partnership between our organizations to prioritize the health and wellness of the communities we serve. Our teams have been working around the clock to streamline the vaccination process to accommodate as many people as we can. It is a privilege to be in a position where we can open another community vaccination site along with our Mohegan colleagues.”

Under the current phase of Connecticut’s vaccination program, individuals over the age of 65 are eligible to be vaccinated, and will soon expand to more eligible groups. For updates on the phased rollout, visit ct.gov/covidvaccine.

Mohegan Sun Among The First To Achieve Health Security Verification From Sharecare With Forbes Travel Guide

UNCASVILLE, CT (January 19, 2021) – Mohegan Sun, recently named an “Industry Innovator” by Eastern Connecticut’s Chamber of Commerce, is proud to be among the first casino resorts in the world to become Sharecare Health Security VERIFIED® with Forbes Travel Guide. The comprehensive facility verification helps ensure that guests and travel planners can book with confidence at properties that have appropriate health safety procedures in place. This verification also comes with an easily identifiable “seal of approval” – the Sharecare VERIFIED® with Forbes Travel Guide badge – based on compliance with expert-validated best practices that minimize the risk and impact of COVID-19 and potential future public health events.

“We are thrilled to be one of the first resorts to receive this important verification from Sharecare and Forbes Travel Guide,” said Jeff Hamilton, President & General Manager of Mohegan Sun. “This is another testament to our team’s hard work and ability to quickly adapt in the unpredictable environment we live in. We will continue to be an innovative force in the hospitality industry by remaining dedicated to providing a safe atmosphere for guests while delivering exceptional guest service.”

Developed by Forbes Travel Guide, the global authority on genuine Five-Star service, and digital health industry leader Sharecare, the comprehensive verification covers more than 360 standards across health and hygiene protocols, cleaning products and procedures, ventilation, physical distancing, the guest experience, and health safety communication with guests and employees. Hotels and resorts are required to verify their health protocols on an ongoing basis to ensure continued compliance with the most up-to-date global health standards.

“The pandemic has made it clear that hotels and resorts must, first and foremost, assure guests of their safety,” said Filip Boyen, CEO of Forbes Travel Guide. “By becoming VERIFIED®, Mohegan Sun has demonstrated its commitment to creating a culture of accountability and following global best practices to heighten health security, certified by a third party.”

In response to the global pandemic, Mohegan Sun invested over $1 million in a health & safety plan that includes non-invasive thermal temperature scans, cutting edge UV light technology installed in air handler systems, plexiglass dividers at transactional locations, rigorous cleaning protocols, mandatory mask requirements and more. Health and safety protocols for Mohegan Sun are created with guidance from the Mohegan Tribal Health Department, an on-site team of medical experts equipped with the knowledge, tools and direct pipelines to additional health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CTDPH).  As a result of this invaluable resource, health and safety protocols at Mohegan Sun meet, and in many cases exceed, those set by the CDC and CTDPH.

Mohegan Sun is one of the only casino & entertainment destinations in the nation that has been able to safely host “bubble” experiences for major sporting events in the past year, including a historic residency with Bellator MMA and SHOWTIME Sports®, and hosting College Basketball’s “Bubbleville” tournament that featured 26 games over the course of 10 days.

All health and safety protocols are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the needs of the community, along with state and federal recommendations. A full list of Mohegan Sun’s guidelines can be found at mohegansun.com/updates.

Mohegan Sun Named “Industry Innovator” by Eastern Connecticut’s Chamber of Commerce Annual ECTy Awards

Mohegan Sun was recently recognized as “Industry Innovator” by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut’s annual awards, also known as the “ECTys,” aiming to recognize excellence in both business and the community. The “Industry Innovator” award showcases businesses of any size that have shown strong ability to adapt to the marketplace by introducing or embracing new concepts or technologies to better serve customers. This award also takes into account businesses that provide unique opportunities for its workforce development.

“Being recognized with this particular ECTy Award is truly an honor for Mohegan Sun,” said Jeff Hamilton, President & General Manager of Mohegan Sun. “Our goal is to always adapt and evolve to any business environment, stay on the cutting edge of customer service and develop rising stars within our company. Two key areas where this has been a major success is through key upgrades at our hotel and through our Disability Vocational Program.”

With casino & resort competition on the increase in recent years, Mohegan Sun made a major design upgrade to its iconic 36-level Sky Tower hotel. A full VIP treatment was rolled out through a “hotel-in-a-hotel” known as Aspire. Located on the highest levels of Sky Tower, Aspire guests receive their own private valet and check-in, as well as a unique arrival gift that joins sweeping views of the New England countryside and five-star accommodations. Aspire guests also can take advantage of their very own butler and access to the exclusive luxury food and beverage experience on the 33rd floor, aptly titled, Thirty Three.

Mohegan Sun hotel rooms now also feature an advanced and fully automated minibar by Bartech, which allows guests to purchase food and other items with ease, while allowing Mohegan Sun’s hotel front office to easily track sales.

When it comes to workforce development, Mohegan Sun has been an industry leader. Mohegan Sun’s Student Vocational Inclusion Program, which gains improvements and new talent every year, provides internships across various focuses for young people with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities.  Local schools in Montville, Norwich, Waterford and more, are partners in the program that has now been running strong for nearly 10 years.  Mohegan Sun’s Wardrobe department, Culinary team, Environmental Services (EVS), among other areas, have all had positive impacts from the program.  As a testament to that success, many internships result in permanent and meaningful roles at Mohegan Sun.

While Mohegan Sun’s showrooms have not been open to the public during the global pandemic, earlier in 2020, an innovative food app ordering system (Noble) was implemented in Mohegan Sun Arena where guests can order concessions directly from their seat. This service will return in the future, when entertainment programming on a wider level is able to safety return.

Mohegan Sun, like so many businesses and destinations, also had to evolve and adapt quickly over the course of the global pandemic and become smart, creative and most importantly, safe. After a temporary closure that occurred in the spring, Mohegan Sun re-opened with well over $1 million spent on a health & safety plan that involved non-invasive thermal temperature scans, UV light technology throughout air handler systems, plexiglass dividers at transactional locations, rigorous cleaning protocols, mask requirements and much more. The Mohegan Tribal Health Department also operates on-site and proved vital in all phases of Mohegan Sun’s health & safety measures.  They also played a key role in Mohegan Sun Arena becoming home to multiple bubble-site residencies for major sporting events in recent months, such as College Basketball’s “Bubbleville,” that featured 26 games, many of which were nationally televised, across 10 days in late November and early December.

Mohegan Tribe, Mohegan Sun and Yale New Haven Health Launch Testing Site at the Casino

UNCASVILLE, CT (December 8, 2020) – Yale New Haven Health, the Mohegan Tribe and Mohegan Sun have announced a new community COVID-19 collection site in the Mohegan Sun Thames Garage.

The drive-through site was selected to provide more community testing in the Uncasville region, but also to allow Mohegan Sun team and Tribal members access to fast, safe COVID-19 testing. The Thames Garage location is open to the public and Mohegan team members by appointment only.

The new Yale New Haven Health site will provide COVID-19 testing (symptomatic and asymptomatic) for patients with or without insurance. If a child is under age 18, a parent/guardian must be present. All adults over 18 must bring a photo ID. Face masks are required.

Appointments are required and can be made by a physician placing an order or by using the following link: https://covidtesting2.ynhhs.org/

The Mohegan Tribe and Mohegan Sun recently expanded a partnership with Yale New Haven Health, to further ensure the safety and health of not just team members of Mohegan Sun, but for the larger surrounding community. This COVID-19 collection site in the Mohegan Sun Thames Garage is a significant part of that goal. Construction of an 8,500 square-foot health center located in Trading Cove lot, which will provide Primary Care, Walk-in care and Specialty care for employees, the public and Mohegan Tribal members, is also underway and planned for a spring 2021 opening.

Since temporarily closing in March 2020, and reopening to the public on June 1, 2020, Mohegan Sun has been at the forefront of making health & safety a top priority as well as assisting on important community efforts. During the spring and summer of this year, the Mohegan Tribe and Mohegan Sun teamed up with the Connecticut National Guard to serve as Connecticut’s Region 4 PPE distribution site. N95 masks, gloves, sanitizer and more were distributed to public health teams and medical services in surrounding towns, from the 125,000 square-foot Earth Expo center.

In the last few months and still on-going, Mohegan Sun struck major deals with Bellator MMA, SHOWTIME Boxing and the NCAA, to create bubble atmospheres for athletes to safely compete, often to national TV audiences.  These events have taken place primarily in Mohegan Sun Arena, without fans in attendance. The successful execution of these sporting residencies is in large part due to the invaluable work and guidance provided by the medical professionals with the Mohegan Tribal Health Department and Yale New Haven Health.

ABOUT YALE NEW HAVEN HEALTH (YNHHS), the largest and most comprehensive healthcare system in Connecticut, is recognized for advanced clinical care, quality, service, cost effectiveness and commitment to improving the health status of the communities it serves.
