Friday, January 22nd & Saturday, January 23rd in The Shops Concourse at Mohegan Sun
This weekend Mohegan Sun is hosting open workouts in The Shops at Mohegan Sun concourse with professional boxers Peter Manfredo Jr., 33-6-0 (18 KOs), of Providence, RI, Adelita Irizarry, 6-3-0 (2 KOs), of Hartford, CT and Joseph “Chip” Perez, 2-0-0 (1KO), of East Hartford, CT to preview the exciting Friday Night Fights event in Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, January 29th.
A boxing ring will be setup in The Shops Concourse at Mohegan Sun and there will be three sparring sessions; one on Friday and two on Saturday. Friday’s session will take place from 1:00pm – 3:30pm and will feature all three fighters; Manfredo Jr., Irizarry and Perez. Saturday’s afternoon session will take place from 12:00pm – 3:00pm and will feature Irizarry and Perez. Saturday evening’s session will take place from 7:00pm – 9:00pm and will feature only Peter Manfredo Jr. The workouts are free and open to the public. Media are also encouraged to attend.
Headlining the January 29th event, Peter Manfredo Jr. will face off against Matt “The Predator” Vanda in the ten-round main event for the NABF Super Middleweight Title.
The twenty-nine year-old Manfredo, 33-6-0 (18 KOs), is coming off a brutal first-round stoppage of veteran Ronald Weaver on November 5th in Cockeysville, Maryland. Earlier in 2009, Manfredo stopped Walid Smichet with a devastating knockout in the seventh round on April 18th at the Casino Montréal in Quebec, Canada.
In addition to his second place finish in the premiere season of NBC’s The Contender, Manfredo has faced world-class competition throughout his career, with many of his biggest wins coming in the New England area.
The co-feature on January 29th is a featherweight showdown between Hartford’s Matt “The Sharp Shooter” Remillard and Dominican Rafael Lora in a ten round battle for the NABF Featherweight Title. The bout is a rematch of their action-packed September 19th bout, won by Remillard in a controversial fourth round stoppage, which Lora hotly disputed.
In a special attraction bout, hard hitting fan favorite, Adelita Irizarry makes her return to Mohegan Sun in a six round welterweight bout. A native of Hartford, Irizarry, 6-3-0 (2 KOs), won a four-round unanimous decision over Yvonne Reis on August 29, 2008 in her last bout at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Also making his return to the ring is popular junior lightweight newcomer Joseph “Chip” Perez. Twenty-three year-old Perez won his pro debut on September 19th with a terrific four-round unanimous decision over Juan Zuniga. In his most recent bout Perez, 2-0-0 (1KO), stopped Lewis Crews on December 19th.

Hailed as one of the pioneers of rock music in Taiwan, Mayday is an Alternative Rock band that was formed in the late 90s with five members, Ashin, Monster, Stone, Masa and Guan You. Mayday’s songs are written mostly in Mandarin with some Min Nan tracks by Ashin. They are popular for their student band roots and their ability to capture the zeitgeist of Taiwanese youth in the mid to late 90s.
Mayday has made no secret of its admiration of the Beatles whom they cite as influencing their ideals of Rock music. The song “John Lennon” off their fifth album showcases the group’s dream to become the “Beatles of the Chinese World.” Other diverse musical influences include the Irish band U2, the British band Oasis and China Blue.
The band released its first album under Rock Records on July 7, 1999 and they were nominated for “Best Band” at the 11th Golden Melody Awards that same year. The band’s second album Viva Love was released in July 2000 and won the award for “Best Band” at the 12th Golden Melody Awards. The album’s success was followed by a series of concerts called Ten Thousand Youths Standing Up in Taipei City, Zhang Hua and Kaohsiung City. On March 19, 2009, Mayday kicked off their new World Tour D.N.A. Mayday “Creates” Concert which commenced in Hong Kong and the band released two songs “D.N.A.” and “Unbridled” for the tour.

Singer’s performance on January 18th has been postponed
Due to exhaustion and dehydration, Lady Gaga collapsed and passed out before her show last night in West Lafayette, IN. Her physician has advised her to take a few days off to rest.
The Monday, January 18th performance at Mohegan Sun Arena is POSTPONED. A new rescheduled date is to be announced. Tickets for the Monday, January 18th Mohegan Sun date will be honored at the rescheduled date. Refunds can be made at point of purchase.

Cheryl Burke is a two-time Dancing With The Stars champion, first partnered with 98 Degrees singer Drew Lachey in the second season of the hit reality show and again with all-time great Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith in the third season. Iconic recording artists Carole King and James Taylor unveiled North American dates for the highly-anticipated “Troubadour Reunion” tour today. This once-in-a-lifetime event marks a rare concert experience bringing two of the most beloved singer/songwriters on tour together – intimate and in the round – for the first time in four decades. The duo will be performing live at Mohegan Sun on Saturday, June 12th at 7:30pm. King and Taylor will also perform together on The Today Show and The Late Show with David Letterman on January 20th.

The idea for the tour was conceived after a series of six performances Taylor and King gave at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in 2007 to celebrate the famed venue’s 50th anniversary. The shows sold out immediately and garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike.
Joining King and Taylor on tour will be their original bandmates guitarist Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar, famous in their own right as “The Section.” Also joining “The Section” will be Rudy Guess, Robbie Kondor, Arnold McCuller, Kate Markowitz and Andrea Zonn.
King and Taylor’s historic performance together at the Troubadour in November 1970 heralded King’s transition to solo stage performer, after penning 22 Top 40 hits for artists ranging from Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” to The Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Meanwhile Taylor was supporting his self-titled Apple Records release featuring classics such as “Carolina In My Mind” and “Something In The Way She Moves.”
In 1971, Carole King gave us the landmark Tapestry. The album received a Diamond Award from the RIAA for sales of more than 10 million units in the U.S., with more than 25 million units sold worldwide. King was the first woman to win four Grammy Awards in one year (“Best Album,” “Best Song,” “Best Record,” and “Best Vocal Performance” in 1972), a feat unsurpassed for more than 25 years, and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1973. In 1987, King and Gerry Goffin were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and honored with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 1988. Goffin and King were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and were honored by The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2004 with the Grammy Trustees’ Award. To date, more than 400 Carole King compositions have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists, resulting in more than 100 hit singles – many reaching #1. She is arguably the most successful and revered female songwriter in Pop music history. Carole King has released 25 solo albums, the most recent being The Living Room Tour double-live CD and companion DVD, entitled Welcome to My Living Room on her own Rockingale Records label.
Over the course of his career, James Taylor has sold more than 40 million albums and has won more than 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards as well as five Grammy Awards. Taylor’s first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. In 2000, Taylor was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In February 2006, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences named Taylor its MusiCares “Person of the Year.” Taylor’s CD/DVD One Man Band (2007) was nominated for an Emmy and his most recent album, Covers, was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2008. Martin Nievera is a singer, songwriter and actor from the Philippines and the son of legendary Filipino balladeer Bert Nievera. He began his singing career in 1982 with his album Martin..Take One which reached platinum status in just five months. Nievera also has an extensive acting career and has starred in eleven movies and seven television series. He is currently hosting several television shows including A.S.A.P. and Martin After Dark.
Gary Valenciano is a Filipino musician whose energetic dance moves also garnered him the nickname “Mr. Pure Energy.” He has released 26 albums and won the Awit Award for “Best Male Performer” eleven times. His unforgettable hits include “Love of Mine”, “Shout for Joy” and “Until Then.” Valenciano has also performed all over the world and became the first UNICEF National Ambassador of Goodwill for the Philippines in 1998.
