Mohegan Sun Arena looks to take home its eighth Academy of Country Music Award
The Academy of Country Music recently recognized Mohegan Sun Arena as a nominee for “Casino of the Year – Arena.” Mohegan Sun Arena is one of four nominees for the prestigious honor. The Academy of Country Music will award a winner at its 15th annual Industry Honors ceremony in the fall.
“It’s always an honor and of course a tribute to our world-class venue and team to be included, especially last year as we reimagined our venue to stay open with sports and entertainment programming all throughout the pandemic,” said Tom Cantone, President of Sports and Entertainment at Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment.
The award is presented to an outstanding arena within a casino and selected by a professional panel of judges. In order to be eligible for the award, casino arenas must have bought or promoted at least four Country concerts during the year, be in good standing with all agents, and help promote Country ticket sales.
Mohegan Sun last took home the award in 2019, its last year of eligibility since winners from previous years are not considered for consecutive nominations in the category. A win would make it the eighth time the ACM has honored Mohegan Sun Arena, and its 17th national award for the 10,000-seat Arena.
With one of the most successful years in its history, including being named Innovator of the Year by Celebrity Access, Mohegan Sun Arena drew more than 450,000 people in 2021, making it the top casino venue in the world despite being open for less than half the year.
Mohegan Sun Arena hosted Lady A – who is nominated for “Group of the Year” at this year’s award ceremony – to launch their first full-capacity national tour since re-opening for live entertainment in late July last year. Since then, Toby Keith, Blake Shelton, Brett Eldredge, Brett Young, and Chris Young also performed to sold-out crowds in the Arena in 2021. Chris Young, who made his Mohegan Sun Arena debut in December, leads all artists with seven ACM nominations, including “Album of the Year” and “Single of the Year.” Three of his nominations are shared with country superstar Kane Brown for their song “Famous Friends.”
Kane Brown and Walker Hayes, who will be performing back-to-back shows at Mohegan Sun Arena on June 4th-5th, combined for eight nominations at this year’s awards. Hayes, who will be opening for Brown alongside Raelynn, received five nominations as a first-time nominee, including “New Male Artist of the Year,” and “Song of the Year.” The second Brown concert at Mohegan Sun Arena was added by popular demand after the initial show sold out on the first day of ticket sales.
Mohegan Sun Arena already has an All-Star lineup of Country acts for 2022, including Brad Paisley, Sam Hunt, and Keith Urban, in addition to Kane Brown. More information on ticket prices and additional shows can be found at Mohegan Sun.
The 57th Academy of Country Music Awards will stream live on Prime Video on Monday, March 7th at 8:00pm. It will make history as the first major awards show to livestream exclusively.
Mohegan Sun Arena is now ranked consistently among the top venues in the world according to Billboard Magazine, Pollstar and VenuesNow. Mohegan Sun Arena is consistently ranked among the top three “Arenas in the World for its Size” and top 15 in the “World for All Size Venues.” The award – winning venue is the “#1 Casino Venue in the World,” “#1 Social Media Venue in the World” and a seven – time national award – winner for “Arena of the Year.” For more information on concerts and other great events, visit Mohegan Sun. Special guest illuminati hotties set to open for Death Cab for Cutie
Eight-time Grammy-nominated Rock band Death Cab for Cutie will take the stage for one night at 7:30pm on Friday, July 15th at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Tickets are $45 and $35 and go on sale Friday, March 11th at 10:00am via ticketmaster.com. Tickets will also be available at the Mohegan Sun Box Office beginning Saturday, March 12th, subject to availability.
Death Cab for Cutie originally formed in Bellingham, Washington, in 1998. Their 2005 studio release, Plans, proved the band’s popular breakthrough, earning RIAA platinum certification, as well as spawning the chart-topping singles, “Soul Meets Body” and “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” the latter of which was honored with a Grammy nomination for “Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals.” Plans also received a nod for “Best Alternative Album” at the Grammy’s. Their following albums, Narrow Stairs (2008), The Open Door (2009), Codes and Keys (2011), and Kintsugi (2015), also all received various Grammy nominations, yielding their fourth straight nomination for “Best Alternative Music Album” and bringing their nominations to eight overall.
Death Cab for Cutie’s most recent full-length release, Thank You for Today (2018), is the sound of a band both expanding and refining 22 years into its evolution, and still uncovering new curves in signatures and new sonic corners to explore. The Seattle group’s ninth studio album was heralded by lead single “Gold Rush,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Songs chart.
In December 2020, ahead of the run-off elections in Georgia, the band released The Georgia E.P., featuring covers of iconic artists from the state. Originally released as a 24-hour Bandcamp exclusive, the EP raised more than $100,000 for Fair Fight Action, Stacey Abrams’ voting rights organization promoting fair elections around the country through voter education, election reform, and combating voter suppression.
Throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, lead vocalist and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard helped raise more than $250,000 in donations and supplies for various Seattle-area relief organizations via his series of at-home livestream performances.
Most recently in February 2022, Gibbard conceived, curated, and executive produced Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono – a tribute to the acclaimed singer, songwriter, multimedia artist, and activist. Death Cab for Cutie themselves contributed a cover of “Waiting For The Sunrise,” with other artists on compilation including David Byrne, Japanese Breakfast, The Flaming Lips, and Sharon Van Etten.
Mohegan Sun Arena finished 2021 with its first “#1 Indoor Arena” ranking for its capacity in the world according to Pollstar and VenuesNow, ranked among the top 10 venues in the U.S. regardless of size based on ticket sales, and was named “2021 Innovator of the Year” by Celebrity Access for its ViacomCBS residency.
